Riley Youngblood, on this day, April 22nd, 1984, being his 14th birthday, has just found a strange little booklet stuck in his neighbour's cedar hedge. It turns out to be a magical passport to a strange place called Santalamanchia in another dimension of Earth's reality/unreality. The passport has Riley's name and picture in it. It is meant for him! After dealing with a couple of issues involving his friend Rick, and his enemies from the other street, Riley embraces the pull of the passport. Harry McGivor, the hot-rod taxi driver, delivers Riley to Earth's parallel world of Santalamanchia, whereupon Riley eventually starts out on a quest to find Romax, grand leader of the universe, the most hated being in existence according to Goldy, his landlady at G.G.'s Bed and Breakfast. Riley discovers a boy named Robert in a detention facility, and resolves to spring him, somehow. As time goes on, Riley gets deeper and deeper into the culture of Romax's world, and his overall universal view of how life should be run---and controlled. Riley meets up with the supreme ruler in the strangest way possible, and thereafter tries to deal with what Romax represents to life in general. Riley accidentally forms a relationship with a fearsome being of gigantic proportions, which he names "Chomper" and, thereafter goes about dealing with Romax's peculiarities and subsequent ambivalent attitude about Riley's personality and specific quirks of this teen-ager's mind. Riley does his best to free others who have been imprisoned by Romax's forces in the only way he knows, by using his brain, and not his brawn, the latter not being of much consequence in any event. Riley's time in Santalamanchia---and on Exudea, Romax's home base---becomes fraught with danger at every turn, and he does his best to do what he has always said he would not do---play games, in this case, 'the game', to win
